The Switch port of Monster Hunter Double Cross is released in Japan at the end of the month, so Capcom has released a new demo of the game to help fans make up their minds.

As this game is currently only scheduled for a Japanese release, the demo is consequently only available on the Japanese eShop. This means you will need to set up a Japanese account to download and play the demo but that is not exactly difficult to do.

However, the game itself is quite Japanese heavy so there is a pretty big language barrier in places. The action is straightforward though, so you should be able to get a feel for the game if you stick with it.

From playing the 3DS version of the game already, this Switch version looks and plays a lot better than I was expecting. It is clearly a port of a 3DS game and the in-game art definitely shows that but it still looks decent.

The more important aspect though is how it plays and this is still classic Monster Hunter. That said the shift to Switch definitely helps the controls. While the New 3DS handhelds come with a right analog nub, having a proper analog stick for looking around is a huge improvement.

The game generally handles well too and I am definitely tempted to pick the full game up once it is out in August.

The only issue with this demo is that the original 3DS game came under a bit of flack from the Japanese fanbase for being not much of an improvement over Monster Hunter Generations.

Considering that the Switch is doing really well in Japan at the moment, I am hopeful that it will help this port of Monster Hunter Double Cross. The good news at least is that the shift from 3DS to the Switch has not affected the game detrimentally in any way.

Monster Hunter Double Cross is released in Japan for Switch on August 25. There is currently no word on a Western release for the game.
