After 64-year career, school adviser retires

Lillian Orlich, 89, officially retired last month after 67 years as a teacher and counselor, spending all but three of them at Osbourn High and nearby Osbourn Park High in Prince William County.

In 1950, she took a bus from Manhattan to teach history in a segregated Manassas school. She has served as a school counselor for parades of siblings and generations of families, sometimes helping the grandchildren of students she counseled early in her career.

Man shoots himself by police headquarters

A man drew a gun on himself about 3:40 p.m. Monday in front of Manassas City Police headquarters in the 9500 block of Fairview Avenue, police said.

Before officers could approach him, the man, whose identity was not immediately released, fatally shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

TUESDAY, JULY 18

Babysitter left children unattended, police say

Amanda Sue Allen of the 3200 block of Burbank Lane in Woodbridge is wanted on charges of felony child neglect and giving a false identity to law enforcement.

The 30-year-old woman is on the run after she left a 2-year-old boy and a baby whom she was babysitting unattended outside their Dumfries apartment, police said.
