Paul Clement declared himself pleased with a positive run-out after watching his Swansea City side draw 2-2 with Philadelphia Union but promised his squad there will be no let-up in workload on this US tour.

The head coach was able to give game time to 21 members of his squad, changing all 10 outfield players at half-time as the Swans build towards the new Premier League season.

After a poor start which saw them concede a penalty, converted by CJ Sapong, after just five minutes, Swansea grew into the game and took the lead through goals from Kyle Bartley and Jordan Ayew.

The Union hit back as ex-Hull and West Brom striker Jay Simpson grabbed an equaliser, but there were some encouraging signs for Swansea - with £11million signing Roque Mesa catching the eye in midfield.

The Swans now move on to North Carolina, where their heavy training workload will continue, and they will do so with Clement satisfied with the progress made following defeat at Barnet.

Swansea City manager Paul Clement

“It’s another good exercise for us, we worked really hard on the training ground yesterday (on Friday), we had two sessions and I think it showed with some of the players looking a little bit leggy,” said the former Derby boss.

“But it is another 45 minutes for all the players as we get into the middle of pre-season now.

“There were no injuries, which is positive.

“We did not get off to a very good start but we started to get going and play well. We got the ball forward, had a lot of set-players and it was probably a fair scoreline going in at half-time.

“I was not so pleased with the second half and the way we played. We did not create much and when we got into good areas we were wasteful.

“I think overall Philadelphia Union deserved a draw, they looked physically better than us and it showed that they are into their season and we are just getting pre-season going.”

Clement admitted he had been happier with the first-half performance, with the tourists being in control of proceedings after conceding the opener following a sloppy pass by Luciano Narsingh.

But he acknowledged the very nature of the game meant fluidity was bound to suffer as the match progressed.

“When you make 10 changes it is never easy being the second half team, but overall it was a positive evening,” he added.

“There is a lot to work on and we move down to North Carolina for the next seven days looking to get some good work in and two more games.

“We played in a good team in a good stadium. It was a nice evening and a good exercise for both teams.

“We will have a session tomorrow (Sunday) and double sessions on Monday and Tuesday, so we will still be working hard on the training field and we will increase the minutes for some players in the game on Wednesday night.

“That will mean less minutes for some players, but we will then flip that around for the second game.”
