Fire crews were called to a blaze at a former GP surgery in Neath Port Talbot this morning .

A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were called at 7.07am to a blaze at the former Briton Ferry Health Centre in Hunter Street, Briton Fery .

He confirmed that four fire engines were sent to the scene. One crew was still on site more than two hours after the initial call.

Eyewitnesses saw flames emerging from the top of the building and black smoke rising into the sky.

Laura Price, from Neath, posted a photograph on Twitter saying: “The surgery is on fire.”

The image shows two fire engines with blue flashing lights outside the building.

Resident Keith Tucker who lives nearby said: "I didn't hear anything at all in the night but my wife saw it on Facebook so I decided to walk the dog past it. It smells of smoke and there has obviously been a lot of damage.

"Lucky it is an old complex and has been closed for a while."

A spokeswoman for the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "We had the call at 7.07am this morning and 4 appliances, from Neath, Port Talbot, Morriston and Pontardawe, attended.

"The aerial appliance, from Swansea West, was also there to be used as a viewing platform and we used a water bowser from Tumble."

She added that no one had been hurt in the fire as far as she knew.

She said: "There was nobody reported to have been involved in the fire, the building was unoccupied."

Fire fighters left the scene at 9.43am.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said they were no yet involved with any investigation.
