Swansea City’s decision to slap a price tag of £50 million on star midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has unsurprisingly caused a significant stir, with fans, pundits and journalists alike all debating whether it’s a fair valuation for the 27-year-old.
Fair or not, a move to Everton appears to be edging closer for the Icelandic international, who has already pulled out of the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.
Should the deal be completed, it would be the latest in a long line of big-money moves involving two British clubs.
But how would the deal rank alongside some of the other mega transfers of the last few years?
Romelu Lukaku - Everton to Manchester United (£75m)
After an impressive record of 87 goals in 166 games for Everton, the 24-year-old Belgium international completed an eagerly-anticipated move to Old Trafford earlier in the summer, in one of the biggest transfer stories of this window.
While it currently stands as the most valuable transfer between two British clubs, Lukaku is the sixth-most expensive signing in the world, with good friend and new team-mate Paul Pogba leading the way on £89.3 million.
Fernando Torres - Liverpool to Chelsea (£50m)
The Spaniard was once a beloved figure at Liverpool, but when he completed a surprise big-money move to Chelsea in January 2011, it provoked a furious reaction among Kopites.
Despite a fairly decent return of 48 goals in 182 games, and a Champions League medal, his time at Stamford Bridge is perhaps unfairly considered by many as a failure.
Raheem Sterling - Liverpool to Manchester City (£49m)
The England international’s departure from Anfield still leaves a bitter taste in the mouth for many Liverpool fans.
After failing to agree a new contract under boss Brendan Rogders, the Reds decided to cash in on the winger in the summer of 2015.
He has since netted 21 goals in 94 appearances at the Etihad.
John Stones - Everton to Manchester City (£47.5m)
At the time of his arrival in August 2016, Stones was the second-most expensive defender in the world behind David Luiz.
After a shaky start, he has since become a regular under boss Pep Guardiola, making 27 Premier League appearances last term.
Kyle Walker - Tottenham to Manchester City (£45m)
The most recent British player to move to City in a big money move.
A rich run of form saw the former Sheffield United star become a regular for Tottenham and England.
Was named as right back in the PFA Team of the Year last term for the second season running.
Juan Mata - Chelsea to Manchester United (£37m)
Was sold by his current boss in January 2014 for what was at the time United’s highest transfer fee ever.
His record of 36 goals in 146 games for the Red Devils is nearly identical what he produced at Chelsea, suggesting he is still a hugely influential talent.
Andy Carroll- Newcastle United to Liverpool (£35m)
Was signed in January 2011 - the same transfer window that saw Luis Suarez arrive at the club.
However, he wasn’t nearly as successful as the Uruguayan, and was loaned out to West Ham in the summer of 2012.
Sadio Mane - Southampton to Liverpool (£34m)
The winger arrived on Merseyside as the most expensive African player in history and has been in impressive form since.
Despite being a relative newcomer to the team, he is still regarded as an important part of Jurgen Klopp's plans.
Rio Ferdinand - Leeds United to Manchester United (£34m)
A transfer that is still talked about to this day.
Ferdinand’s decision to leave Leeds in 2002 for their bitter rivals was sensational enough without the large transfer fee, which at the time made him the most expensive British footballer ever.
Christian Benteke - Aston Villa to Liverpool (£32.5m)
Having spent three very successful seasons at Aston Villa, where he averaged nearly a goal every two games, Liverpool had little hesitation in activating the Belgian striker’s release clause in July 2015.
However, he didn’t quite hit the same heights at Anfield and left after just one season.
