Every now and then, you might turn to your significant other and ask yourself, “What the hell are they doing with a schlub like me?” It’s that contradiction between being in amazement of the person by your side, but feeling so pale by comparison that you’re not sure you’re worth their time. So you try to shape up; you shave a bit more frequently, try not to let the dishes pile up, maybe even start actually watching what you eat. It’s that desire to change for all the right reasons that Coast Modern capture in breezy perfection on their new single “Guru”.
“I had a relationship once with someone who was a total health and wellness wizard while I was just a lazy dweeb,” the band’s Coleman Trapp tells Consequence of Sound about the track. “It’s so hard to be with someone who’s moving ahead way faster than you. ‘Guru’ is about trying to pick up speed to make it work in the name of LOVE. We were inspired by dancehall and the Beach Boys to make a breezy Rom Com to accompany your emotional spring cleaning. Namaste.”
That final line describes the track better than we ever could. Plucky synths rock back and forth like a hammock swaying in the sunset, the perfect nest to cuddle up with your lover and consider how damn lucky you are. Amending your lifestyle isn’t the easiest of tasks, but doing it for the one you love with “Guru” as your soundtrack can definitely be worth it.
