The best part of A Wrinkle in Time’s first trailer is Oprah’s brilliant, celestial costumes

Just trust us on this

Director Ava DuVernay, surrounded by her cast from A Wrinkle in Time, debuted the first trailer for the movie.

It’s a fairly standard trailer, but one aspect stood out in the short, two-minute video: Oprah’s amazing and crazy costumes.

In the movie, Oprah plays Mrs. Which, the most powerful of the three Mrs. Ws, who are celestial beings accompanying Meg Murry, her brother and friend on their journey to save Murry’s father. Mrs. Which is the oldest of the three siblings and, because she has trouble materializing, is usually just seen as a shimmering gleam. Based on the trailer released today, Winfrey’s character will have the opposite problem of not being seen.

Her costumes are stunning. At D23, Winfrey said that one reason she agreed to be in the movie, which is based on Madeleine L'Engle book of the same name and one that Winfrey said she wasn’t familiar with before the project, is because DuVernay promised Winfrey would be able to wear elaborate costumes.

For example, here’s Winfrey standing tall in the middle of a meadow, situated between Mindy Kaling (L) and Reese Witherspoon.

Or this one, which features Murry (played by Storm Reid), looking up at Winfrey in a different, no less spectacular outfit.

Last, but certainly not least, this amazing costume. If the audience wasn’t aware that Winfrey was a celestial being before, it’s certainly obvious in this one moment.

Prior to DuVernay stepping behind the camera on the project, the director instinctively knew that Winfrey was the only person for the job. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, DuVernay said she wanted to bring all of the values for which Winfrey is known into the character’s being.

“[Mrs. Which] is so much of what [Winfrey] teaches and shared through her shows over the years ... about owning your light and conquering darkness and how we have to power ourselves through this life in a certain way and look out for each other,” DuVernay said. “She dropped into the character so well, but it’s also Oprah.”

A Wrinkle in Time, which also stars Chris Pine as the Murry’s missing father, will be released on March 9, 2018.
