50 games, 8-bit style

Some of the most talented indie game developers around are joining together for an especially retro-flavored release.

The five-person team — which consists of Derek Yu, Eirik Suhrke, Jon Perry, Paul Hubans, and Ojiro Fumoto — just announced a new project called UFO 50. It’s a collection of 50 unique 8-bit-style games, spanning what looks to be a huge range of genres, including platformers, puzzle games, beat ‘em ups, and even point-and-click adventures. The team says that around one-third of the titles included will feature some sort of multiplayer aspect, either competitive or cooperative.

“The story of UFO 50 is that the games were all created in the 80's by a fictional company that was obscure but ahead of its time,” the team explains. “They're all connected by a unique 32-color palette and other restrictions we decided on to make them feel more authentic.”

While there are plenty of retro-influenced games out there already, UFO 50 is interesting not just because of its expansive concept, but also because of the pedigree of its creators. Yu developed the seminal (and widely influential) Spelunky, for instance, while Fumoto is the brains behind the similarly old-school action game Downwell.

UFO 50 is expected to launch next year on PC, “and then move on to other platforms.”
