PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, or PUBG for short, is getting a first-person-only mode.
The developer announced the new mode on Twitter. Currently, the game is primarily a third-person competitive shooter.
The 'battle royale' game, which is already a huge hit on Steam while still in Early Access, will be a much different beast in first-person.
For one thing, you won't be able to look around corners safely anymore. In third-person you can crouch at a corner and then swivel your mouse so that you can see what's on the other side. It's actually a pretty major part of the game.
In first-person you won't have that ability, which will make the game much more tense and exciting.
On the other hand, it's questionable how popular first-person mode will even be. It will appeal to the more "hardcore" crowd, and may develop its own niche, but third-person is generally more popular.
Third-person is also more micro-transaction-friendly, since players can see their character the entire time they play, cosmetics included. In first-person mode you can't see that stuff. (This is why Destiny has third-person social zones even though the majority of its gameplay is in first-person.)
Still, it's great to have options and I look forward to trying out this new way to play the game. I'm a big fan of PUBG, and love to see continued support and new content added.
The FPS mode will be included in the game's next monthly update for EU/NA solo and duo servers only. Once the mode is polished it will out to other modes and regions.
