Kentavious Caldwell-Pope Rumors: SG Met with Lakers Tuesday, Others Interested

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope could have a better chance of finding a new home after the Detroit Pistons renounced their rights to the shooting guard July 7. 

According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN, Caldwell-Pope met with the Los Angeles Lakers Tuesday, one of several teams interested in the now unrestricted free agent.

The Lakers also spoke with veteran guard Rajon Rondo Tuesday, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, so they are clearly keeping their options open.

Still, the market apparently remains strong for Caldwell-Pope. Wojnarowski previously reported the Brooklyn Nets would be an "aggressive pursuer" of the 24-year-old.

While the Pistons initially had the ability to match any offer to their guard, he was made expendable when the team acquired Avery Bradley in a trade with the Boston Celtics.

Per Jake Fischer of Sports Illustrated, the Pistons previously offered him an $80 million deal over five years, but it "wasn't even close" to what Caldwell-Pope wanted.

The 2013 lottery pick took a step back offensively this season, averaging just 13.8 points per game with just 39.9 percent shooting from the field. However, the 6'5" player remains a solid defender who also knocked down a career-high 35 percent of his shots from beyond the arc.

This is what helped him remain a regular starter for the Pistons over the past three seasons.

Although his apparent salary demands could limit his options, he should have more opportunities than when he was a restricted free agent.
