Lakers Rumors: Rajon Rondo Still on Radar Despite Kentavious Caldwell-Pope Deal

The Los Angeles Lakers are still considering a deal for free-agent point guard Rajon Rondo, whom they met with on Tuesday, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Although the squad added Kentavious Caldwell-Pope on a one-year deal worth $18 million, per Brian Windhorst of ESPN, the team still its $4.3 million room exception remaining.

The Chicago Bulls waived Rondo in June before the second year of his contract became fully guaranteed. Prior to that, he endured one of the worst seasons of his career, as he averaged only 7.8 points and 6.7 assists per game.

He did look more like himself after the All-Star break with averages of 10.8 points, 7.1 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game, but it wasn't enough for Chicago to keep him around as it began to embark on a rebuild.

Rondo is one of the most accomplished point guards in the NBA, having led the league in assists per game three times. He also has four All-Star appearances and an NBA title to his name. The question is where he could fit with the Lakers.

The franchise drafted Lonzo Ball with the No. 2 overall pick, and he appears poised to become a starter from day one. With Caldwell-Pope and Jordan Clarkson also in the fold, there aren't many backcourt minutes to go around.

Rondo can serve as a mentor for Ball, but he will have to decide whether he'd prefer finding more playing time elsewhere.
