Building collapse in Mumbai

The toll of the dead in Mumbai's Ghatkopar building crash on Tuesday morning touched 17. Besides BMC officials said that seven were still admitted in the hospital while six others were discharged.

Sunil Shitap, who is a Shiv Sena office bearer, allegedly destroyed columns to build the nursing home on the ground floor brushing aside opposition from those living in the building. His wife contested the BMC election on a Sena ticket.

So far, five admitted (three in Rajawadi hospital, two in Shantiniketan hospital), four discharged and four dead (Rajawadi 3, Shantiniketan 1).

Residents of the building said that Sunil Shitap, owner of the hospital that was operating from the ground floor, had been carrying out repair work. The pillars of the structure might have been hit by the repair work leading to the collapse.

This was this monsoon's first major house crash. Around 12 families lived in the building which also housed a private hospital on the ground floor.

Each of the floor in the building were occupied by 3 to 4 families.

Rescue operation is on as many still feared trapped.

Two wings of a ground plus three storied Saidarshan building collapsed at LBS Road, Damodar Park, Near Shreyas Cinema, Ghatkopar (W) on Monday morning.
