Whether you love or hate Insane Clown Posse’s psycho carnival rap, there’s no denying the Detroit act is dedicated to its legion of hardcore fans, known as Juggalos. When one of the group’s followers is in need, Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope slap on the grease paint and zoom to the rescue.
This time, Insane Clown Posse, often abbreviated as I.C.P., is lending support to a late fan from the Miami Valley by headlining the Aaron Spencer Benefit at Rock Star Pro Arena in Dayton on Saturday.
“I.C.P. is known as the most hated band in the world,” said GG Bradley of Rock Star Pro. “They actually do a lot of philanthropic stuff and a lot of charity work for their fans.”
Ben Parker, one of Bradley’s partners at Rock Star Pro, agrees.
“Personally, I’m not really into I.C.P.’s music that much,” Parker said. “But every time I hear about something they do business wise or personally, from fans or people they’ve worked with, it’s nothing but good things. As human beings go, these guys are good, and they’re always willing to help people out.”
Admission is $20, and proceeds benefit the family of Spencer, who passed away in January at age 33.
“One of the wrestlers here, Dave Crist, had a working relationship with I.C.P.,” Parker said. “He knew Aaron and knew he was a fan of I.C.P. so they ended up visiting him last year because he was really sick and didn’t have much time left in his life. They kind of became friends and stayed in touch. When he passed away, I.C.P. wanted to help out.”
Rock Star Pro Arena, which hosts professional wrestling events every Wednesday and on the first Friday of each month, has doubled as a music venue since it opened in February 2012. It has hosted some big shows by acts like Crooks on Tape, Orange Goblin and Swearing At Motorists, but Insane Clown Posse is a major show for the venue.
“We have a long history with a lot of agencies because of what we’ve all done here,” Parker said. “A show like this really gets our name out there and solidifies this place as being a bigger venue that can take on bigger bands and bigger shows. It has opened a lot agencies’ eyes.”
Upcoming concerts at Rock Star Pro Arena include a solo album release show from JT Woodruff of Hawthorne Heights on Friday, March 21; Turnover on April 1; and Spirit Caravan on Thursday, April 10.
