“Acting is something I’ve wanted to do my whole,” says Laverne Cox, who is nominated for outstanding guest actress in a drama series for her role as Sophia Burset on Orange Is the New Black. “It feels really good that the thing I love the most and work really hard at is being acknowledged.
Stopping by the Hollywood Reporter offices for a candid conversation, Cox touches upon multiple topics, including how she is still the only transgender actor to be nominated for a primetime Emmy, the current political climate and the story arc of her character on the hit Netflix show.
“Particularly this episode and this season means so much to me and to trans folks,” she explains of nominated of the fourth episode of season five, “Doctor Psycho.” Adding, “For whatever reason, this time, I was so overwhelmed and my body couldn’t handle it.”
When asked why she thinks Academy voters connect with Sophia, she answered at first by saying: “I don’t know.”
Continuing, “When I can connect with characters, it’s because I see myself in them or I see someone that I know. There’s something human and unexpected.”
