In progress, forever: With road work being under way, motorists left with only one side of the stretch, at Hi-Tech City near Raheja Mindspace.

Delayed civic work in various parts of IT corridor is leading to traffic congestions, increasing the travel time and distance for commuters. In the making for more than a year, the underpass near Raheja Mindspace, being constructed as part of the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP), has missed several deadlines time and again. Even the alternative route has disturbed the smooth traffic flow, while the latest work undertaken by the TSIIC has further turned the situation chaotic.

The Industrial Area Local Authority (IALA) of TSIIC has dug up almost five km of road at Madhapur and Gachibowli for laying new road using white-topping technology. The work that had begun on two stretches, Inorbit–Raheja Mindspace and IIIT-Hyderabad–Outer Ring Road, a few months ago have been progressing at a slow pace.

“I stay at Kavuri Hills and my office is on the side of Inorbit mall. Every day, I end up travelling an additional one km only because one side of the road is closed and one-way traffic rules are put in place,” said K. Shashank, a gamer and an employee of an MNC.

“For those who are new to the area, it’s not just tiring, but confusing. In the evening and morning hours, traffic almost comes to a standstill on these routes.”

The civic work on the 2.5-km stretch at financial district has been giving a tough time for traffic officials too.

“During peak hours, we have to post additional staff as most of the road space on one side of the divider is occupied. The civic officials should not take up such work during monsoon as working becomes tough for us while it increases the risk of accidents for motorists,” said a traffic official, who did not wish to be quoted.

Some local residents opine that there was no need for the work to be taken up in the first place.

“The roads were as good as new ones near Inorbit mall. What is the need to lay a new one spending a huge amount?” asked D. Manohar Reddy, a local resident.

C. Vinod Kumar, Zonal Manager (Cyberabad), said the roads laid with white-topping technology increases their life. He cited shifting of underground cables and coordination work with other departments as the reasons for the delay in completion of the projects.
