The fact that Arcadia recently announced that it was resurrecting the old Yamato 1/3000 scale SDF-1 Macross toy was great news but it seems that Arcadia is going one step further with a deluxe version that features glow in the dark detailing.
The SDF-1 Macross is the main battleship and base of operations for the remnants of humanity in the original Macross saga. This version is actually from the movie Macross: Do You Remember Love? that was released in Japan back in 1984.
Unlike the version of the SDF-1 Macross in the TV series, this version swaps out the Daedalus and Prometheus ships for the spaced based ARMD carriers.
This Premium Finish version of the toy will be purchasable via Arcadia’s site in the near future and will have a more intricate paint job, which will emphasize the detailing of the original design along with a special matte finish.
However, the real bonus is the inclusion of glow in the dark paint for the various viewports and other lights dotted across the huge battleship (shown below).
While internal lighting would have been the ideal option here that would have likely massively increased the price and would also cause complications with the transformation.
This is worth realizing; this is not some kind of fixed posed statue meant for display, this is a toy that you can actually play with.
Coming in at 40cm, this is a big toy though and the standard version is already expensive, as it costs 36,800 yen (or around $337 dollars). The price for this version is still to be determined but it will be very likely even higher than the standard release.
Pre-orders for this Premium Finish version will start soon and the toy will be released in April of next year. If you are interested in getting the standard release this November, then you can import one of these via online retailers such as HobbyLink Japan.
Considering that the last time we had a toy of the SDF-1 Macross at this scale was around 7 years ago, it is both strange and wonderful to think we will have two new versions of the classic design in the near future.
