OnePlus rolling out software update to fix OnePlus 5's 911 rebooting issue [updated]
In a statement Android Authority received via email, OnePlus said: "We have been in touch with the customer and have tested a software update that has resolved the issue. We will be rolling out the software update shortly."
While it's not affecting all devices, and most users may never have encountered it, it's still a problem that never should have existed. Thankfully, OnePlus has reacted quickly, but until the OTA arrives, try to stay out of trouble.
Update #2: OnePlus is now rolling out a fix for the 911 reboot problem. The OxygenOS 4.5.6 hot fix OTA was announced in the OnePlus forums earlier today and will be hitting OnePlus 5 devices from now through the next few days.
The OnePlus 5 is a fantastic smartphone in a lot of ways, but it does have a number of faults. These include the so-called “jelly scrolling” that appears when moving up or down a page and the more recent audio issue.
We can now add another problem to the list, and it’s a major one. It appears that when dialing 911, some OnePlus 5 units reboot instead of connecting the user with an emergency service. This is a big safety concern that was recently discovered by a Reddit user who saw a building on fire and tried — without luck — to call the fire department. Later on, he replicated the problem at home and captured it on camera. Check out the video below.
Based on multiply comments in the Reddit thread, some, but not all OnePlus 5 units are experiencing this issue. However, it’s impossible to say just how many units are actually affected.
A thread published in 2016 on the official OnePlus forums suggests this issue could affect other OnePlus phones as well. That said, the user in question was using a OnePlus 3 running a custom ROM. The device in the video above runs stock OxygenOS.
In a statement to The Next Web, OnePlus said it’s looking into the issue:
“We have contacted the customer and are currently looking into the issue. We ask anyone experiencing a similar situation to contact us at support@oneplus.net.”
Hopefully, the company will be able to sort the problem out with a software update, although it’s worth pointing out that this shouldn’t have happened in the first place.
