A new iPhone 8 leak all but confirms one of the handset’s biggest new features.

A component we haven’t seen in an iPhone before — almost certainly a wireless charging module — surfaced recently on a Chinese social network. It appears to be equipped with a Lightning connector and is clearly labeled “iPhone.”

Apple is expected to unveil a whole bunch of spectacular new features for iPhone 8 to mark the handset’s 10th anniversary. We’re looking forward to a stunning new edge-to-edge display, advanced facial recognition and wireless charging.

None of these things have been confirmed yet — that won’t happen until Apple makes the iPhone 8 official this September — but thanks to a new leak from a tipster on Weibo, we’re almost certain wireless charging is coming.

The module pictured above and below clearly contains a wireless charging coil, which receives power from a charging pad. Similar components can be found in the latest Android devices from the likes of Samsung and Sony.

Alongside the coil, we see what appears to be a Lightning connector. The labels on the top and bottom of the circuit board have been blurred, but one clearly reads “iPhone.” On the back, there’s a sticker that reads “Qi,” the most popular wireless charging standard.

This is the first time we’ve had evidence that wireless charging is coming to iPhone, but don’t count this as concrete confirmation just yet. This could well be a prototype component Apple used for testing. There’s no guarantee it will make it into the final iPhone 8.

Nevertheless, it’s incredibly exciting.
