Jeff Goldblum is scheduled to reprise his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm in Jurassic World 2 next year, and his dialogue will be inspired by Michael Crichton's original Jurassic Park novel. It's not surprising that the overwhelming success of Steven Spielberg's original Jurassic Park film spawned two additional sequels - The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III -- though many people nowadays don't realize that the first two films were actually based on novels.
Crichton had written the Jurassic Park novel as well as its sequel, The Lost World, both of which had been adapted into feature films in the '90s. Although the movies took liberties with the source material, certain aspects remained present in the final product. It wasn't long after the second film released that Universal Pictures decided to continue producing more installments in the extremely lucrative franchise -- and that's how Joe Johnston's Jurassic Park III came into being.
Instead of directly following the events of the third installment, Colin Trevorrow's Jurassic World essentially ignored the previous sequels. However, the movie did manage to bring back one of the original film's actors: B.D. Wong's Dr. Henry Wu. Now, they are taking things even further with J.A. Bayona's Jurassic World 2 by bringing back Goldblum's Ian Malcolm - the rock-star chaotician. While speaking with MTV News, Trevorrow explained that he borrowed dialogue from Crichton's original novel for Malcolm's character in the upcoming sequel.
"You know, I did rely on [Michael] Crichton for a lot. I used a lot of Crichton dialogue. Maybe one of my highlights of this whole process is Goldblum. Jeff Goldblum called me - and I'm not going to do an impression - but he was like, 'Look, I've added a couple of things, and I thought I'd perform it for you.' [Laughs] Oh, great, okay. So, we sat on the phone for an hour as he ran these lines, and I talked about it. And, I mean, that's - it was almost better than being there on set. It was great."
It wouldn't be the first time that Trevorrow borrowed elements from Crichton's original novel. In fact, several aspects of the first Jurassic World movie were taken from hypothetical situations described in the novel, such as the idea of a caretaker sharing an emotional connection with velociraptors. The character ended up becoming Chris Pratt's Owen Grady. Furthermore, the scene of Owen and the other caretakers riding motorcycles alongside the Raptors as they hunted down the Indominus Rex was similar to a scene from Crichton's second novel, The Lost World.
Considering that two decades have gone by since the original film released, people are curious as to how Goldblum's Dr. Malcolm comes back into the fold. Unfortunately, Goldblum is the only other actor, aside from Wong, from the original film to return for the upcoming sequel. In addition to the two aforementioned actors, though, Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are scheduled to reprise their roles as Grady and Claire Dearing, respectively, along with franchise newcomers James Cromwell, Justice Smith, Toby Jones, Rafe Spall, and more.
