In a presentation that was heavy on the celebration of recent box-office successes and with many of Universal’s major upcoming titles not yet ready for a tease, it was left to the studio’s partners to offer the majority of its footage in CineEurope.
On the second day of the trade show in Barcelona, Universal unveiled a stellar lineup of films from powerhouse U.K. producers Working Title, showing an extended trailer from period drama Victoria and Abdul, reuniting Judi Dench and Stephen Frears, plus exclusive clips from The Snowman, based on the Joe Nesbo best-seller and starring Michael Fassbender, and a first look at the trailer for Darkest Hour, the WWII thriller with Gary Oldman (and a fair degree of prothestics) as wartime leader Winston Churchill.
From Focus Features, there was an early preview of Mary Magdalene, from Lion director Garth Davis and starring Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix, the trailer from Sofia Coppola‘s Cannes winner The Beguiled and an exclusive promo from Charlize Theron-starring Cold War spy thriller Atomic Blonde, already getting impressive reviews. Atomic Blonde is being given a full screening on day three on CineEurope.
After six months that saw Blumhouse smash records with Get Out and Split, the Barcelona audience also got to see the trailer for the horror specialist’s latest offering, Happy Death Day.
But though the Jurassic World sequel — currently filming in Hawaii (despite a lack of clips, Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt gave a shout-out from the set) — is arguably Universal’s biggest future title, there was still space for at least some footage from the studio’s upcoming films.
An exclusive extended promo of Tom Cruise’s American Made was screened, plus blink-and-you’ll-miss-them teasers from Fifty Shades Freed, the Mamma Mia sequel and Pitch Perfect 3.
The presentation closed with a screening of Despicable Me 3.
