Hong Kong police searching for suspected thief after HK$20,000 jacket goes missing in Lan Kwai Fong pub
Customer left jacket in cloakroom of pub, and discovered it was gone when he tried to pick it up later
Hong Kong police are searching for a thief after a 61-year-old man lost his HK$20,000 jacket in the early hours of Tuesday while drinking in the city’s Lan Kwai Fong entertainment hub in the Central district.
The Ermeneglido Zegna jacket was holding a HK$4,000 pen and a leather case carrying the customer’s bank and identity cards.
Officers were sent to the pub in Ho Lee Commercial Building on D’Aguilar Street shortly before 2am after receiving the report of theft from the customer surnamed Gao.
He discovered it was stolen when he tried to pick it up at the cloakroom, and called police at 1.55am.
A police source said it was possible that someone might have collected the wrong jacket while drunk and left, adding that the force was investigating all possibilities.
The source said officers would pore over security camera footage to find out who took the jacket. No one has been arrested so far. Detectives from the Central police station are handling the case.
Police figures showed there were 8,228 reports of theft across the city in the first four months of this year, compared with 8,294 theft cases handled by the force in the same period last year.
Three years ago, a HK$995,000 alligator skin coat was stolen from a Burberry store in Tsim Sha Tsui. Police later arrested two men and recovered the light grey trench coat.
