Ahead of this week’s San Diego Comic-Con, Valiant Entertainment has announced its most unexpected title yet: a team-up between the company’s supernatural hero Shadowman and Rae Sremmurd, the hip-hop duo behind last year’s viral track “Black Beatles.” (Or, as you might know it, “that song playing in all those Mannequin Challenge videos.”)
Shadowman/Rae Sremmurd No. 1 will be written by Eliot Rahal, with painted art by Wolverine and Superman artist Renato Guedes, and will feature a crossover in New Orleans that, unsurprisingly, brings the spooky to the stage. (Artwork above shows the variant cover artwork by Leif Jones; Guedes‘ main cover is below.)
“Comic books are a form of entertainment. I get to make all the sounds and effects in my head. It’s just like you use your imagination — you go through the pictures and the pictures are always awesome. It’s like an escape from reality,” the band’s Slim Jxmmi said in a statement from the publisher. “Shadowman is crazy. It has a lot of twists and turns. It keeps me involved and interested. I can’t even take my eyes off of Shadowman when I read it. I have to finish the book.”
The one-off issue will be released in October, ahead of a launch of a new solo Shadowman series intended for March next year. The character is also currently being developed as a movie with Reginald Hudlin attached to direct.
