a) Versioned backups.

b) Don't use network file sharing for backups. No NFS, no CIFS, no Windows shares, no Samba. Use a client/server backup tool.

c) Don't leave backup storage on a system that can be compromised (like a Windows server)

I can't speak for Windows, but for Unix and Linux systems, everything to make this work is 100% free, libre, open source, software and pretty bonehead to get working.

We don't leave important data on Windows systems, ever.

why did they attack Chernobyl NPP in Ukraine? to attack multi-national companies is probably acceptable to some, but an ageing NPP that is tethering on the borderline of a massive new world threatening accident...this is unacceptable and they must be found.

Only $300? Maybe the attackers responsible aren't really in this to get rich? Or maybe they expect more people would just pay up since it's a small price to pay? (But the email address where to send the money has already been shut down.)

Or maybe it's not meant to be ransomware at all but rather just to be disruptive or even destructive.

That's terrible. Completely agree with the author, norwadays internet security is impotant issue. I decided to use VPN network or anonimazer to protect my privacy online. I think it's also important to check the efficiency of any VPN before using it, it's easy to do at such online services as find my ip address. Thanks for the useful article, was interesting to read.
