Restoring a Claw Hammer

This week i restored my 1st ever / only claw hammer, one of the 1st tools i owned.

I restored it to a polished finish with a black handle and polished steel pins.

My first job was to start on rust removal, i dont own any power tools other than a drill.

So i used a series of sandpaper, files, wd40 and tears until all of the rust was gone.

Once all of the major rust was gone i used a wire wheel in my drill to get rust out of all the dents and scratches that where left

Next i moved onto the handle,i used a off cut of 2x4 for this.

Nothing fancy i just drew out a rough blank shape, cut it down the middle, and chiseled out a recess for the hammer.

Using some 2 part epoxy i glued it all back and glued the hammer in place.

Sorry no idea why i didnt film or take pictures of this part!

To shape the handle i cut off the corners and used my block plane to plane down the 4 edges, then i rotated it and planed, and rotated and planed, leaving me with a octagonal handle.

Once all the shaping had been done i added a rare earth magnet to the bottom of the handle and started to paint it.

I was intending to sand most of the paint off but i like the look of a solid black handle so i left it.

Next i drilled out some holes all the way through the handle for some steel pins and epoxy'd them in as well

Sanding, a whole lot of sanding.

I sanded everything at 120,240,320,500 and finally 1,200.

After smoothing the pins i had to apply more paint and then started sanding.

Then i moved onto a buffing pad with some polishing compound on to polish the metal .

Thats it, job done.

I love how this turned out, and i love the fact my knackered rusty old hammer now has a new handle and a nice shiny polish again.

Its all been finished with a couple of coats of spray lacquer to help protect it and hopefully keep all the rust off again!!
