AMD Announces Ryzen Threadriper Pricing And Availability: Intel Under Threat?

This article is more than 6 years old.

AMD has announced pricing and expected availability for its highly anticipated high-end Ryzen Threadripper processors. The Ryzen Threadripper 1950X, which has 16 cores, 32 threads and base/boost frequencies of 3.4/4.0 GHz, will retail for $999 -- roughly the same as Intel's 10-core/20 thread Core i9-7900X.

Also revealed is the Ryzen Threadripper 1920X, which has 12 cores, 24 threads and base/boost frequencies of 3.5GHz and 4GHz. It is slated to retail for $799, which is a match for Intel's 8-core/16-thread Core i9-7820X.

AMD revealed an actual Threadripper processor for the first time back in May

The two CPUs do not tally at all with rumors earlier this year of the lineup of Threadripper CPUs, with different names and specifications and not matching any of the nine CPUs that hit the rumor mills a few months ago. However, we do now know the pricing of the flagship model, which means that all the others can only be cheaper.

A video highlights new details about not just Ryzen Threadripper, but also details of Ryzen 3. The other details in the above graph regarding Threadripper are purely based on rumors so far -- only the green highlighted models are currently confirmed.

It remains to be seen how mature the Ryzen Threadripper platform will be when it hits shelves in early August -- I've heard from a few industry professionals that it, like Ryzen, is facing some challenges with optimization, but with motherboards already having been revealed and AMD hopefully having learned some lessons with the Ryzen launch, I'm hopeful things will be much more solid this time round.
