I saw people discussing stardates the other day and thought I’d pitch in for a second here, because I had the Stardate problem last year when I needed the Earth dates for reasons (160 Shades of JetC) and also realized that the episodes were out of order.
I found a spectacular site that went through all the reference episodes and the underlying math when it comes to converting stardates to Earth calendar. The guy who did the calculations came up with 918.23186 Stardates per year for 24th century stardates (apparently there have to be different calculations for the different centuries/series.
Everything he explains, with reference to the episodes where stardates and Earth dates are mentioned (from TNG, DS9 and VOY) makes total sense and is mathematically sound, so I decided last year to go with those calculations. And the big plus is, that they are down to the minute. Yay 😁
I made a chart with those calculations that put the episodes in their (hopefully) correct order when it comes to internal chronology and gives most of them an Earth date. (Those without dates were sorted by production number
So for anyone who’s looking for an alternative, feel free to use this.
PS: They also have the same calculator for 23rd century stardates (TOS) and the movies.
PPS: Why the different guide? The other stardate calculations put the VOY episode Homestead on a wrong day. They are celebrating the 315th First Contact Day (so April 6th, 2378) and the (presumably) next day Janeway records a log on stardate 54868.6. There’s no way that day is November 14th or we’d have a time jump of roughly 7 months!!!
PPPS: And also having Voyager home just before Christmas sounds nice, but it never quite sat right with me. I very much prefer having them home just before Kathy’s birthday in May.
PPPPS: Obviously not my calculations, I just put everything in neat order.
That’s all. Thanks for reading.
