Theresa May suffers record fall in popularity among vengeful Tory members after election debacle

Survey by Conservative Home reveals PM has fallen from top of its Cabinet league table to second BOTTOM

THERESA May has suffered a record fall in popularity among vengeful Tory members as they blame her for the election debacle.

But leadership contender Boris Johnson has also slid down the rankings according to a shock new poll, while his rival to replace the Prime Minister - David Davis - has seen his support skyrocket.

A survey by the Conservative Home website revealed Mrs May has fallen from the top of its Cabinet league table to second BOTTOM.

Her net satisfaction rating has plunged from +89.1 pr cent in May to MINUS 26.1 per cent

ConHome editor Paul Goodman said: “Theresa May has endured a record fall -137 points shredded in a single go. Party members want her out as leader – though not yet.”

It’s an even bigger fall than the one suffered by Chancellor Philip Hammond after his screeching National Insurance U-turn.

And it reflects the stunning transformation in fortunes suffered by the PM in a matter of months.

In April, pollsters Ipsos Mori said Theresa May was more popular with voters than any leader since the late 1970s.

She was riding high in the polls, some putting her as much as 20 per cent clear of Labour when she called the snap election.

And having been expected to romp home on June 8 with a much-increased majority – instead she ended up returning to Parliament in charge of a minority administration.

Mrs May appears to have copped the blame for the turnaround, while Mr Davis’ popularity doesn’t appear to have suffered despite rumours it was he who helped convince the PM to call the election.

Instead the Brexit Secretary leads the pack of Cabinet Ministers on +78.4 per cent – ahead of Michael Gove, who goes straight into second place since his appointment as Environment Secretary.

But Ruth Davidson, the Scottish Conservative leader, polls higher on +84.5, while at the opposite end Patrick McLoughlin, the Tory party chairman, came bottom of the pile on -29.3.

Mr Goodman said Mr Johnson’s slide – from 47.9 to 38.8 – reflected a “pattern of falls” across the board, including one for Ms Davidson.

But Mr Goodman said: “It scarcely matters.

“She outperforms every member of the Cabinet and clearly would be very competitive for a leadership election were she in the Commons.”
