Two McDonald's employees have revealed why the ice cream machine is often down - and it's nothing to do with running out of sprinkles.

Taking to Twitter to reveal the hidden secrets of the fast food chain, ex-employee @will_doyle claimed despite having 'out of order' stickers on them, the machines are often working fine - staff just don't want to clean them.

"Btw, I used to work in McDonald's," he wrote. "The ice cream machine was never broken, it just takes 3 hours to clean so we used to say it was broke so we didn't have to serve you lot. Cheers x [sic]"

Another former worker posted: "As an ex McDonald's employee, the ice cream machine was always working it just took too long to clean it so we used to tell everyone it was broken hahaha."

Responding to a fan who was upset about the McFlurry machine being down, the fast food restaurant wrote on Twitter, "Our shake and soft-serve ice cream machines undergo heat treatment cycles every 24 hrs—they're disassembled, sanitised and cleaned every 14 days. We’re sorry for any inconvenience."

While you're here? If you're a fan of McDonald's ice cream, you might want to just ignore the below photo from 2017, because what you're about to see is gross, shocking and really quite life-changing.

One guy, claiming to be a McDonald's employee in the US, tweeted a photo of what he claims is a part of the ice cream machine with what looks like a whole heap of mould inside.

Take a look for yourself and try really hard not to vom...

@PhuckYouNick posted the photo on Twitter last week and has now received over 17 thousand likes and 14 thousand retweets as the pic has swiftly gone viral. There's no actual proof that this is what the inside looks like, so it's up to you if you believe what a random man on Twitter has to say.

In response to the photo, McDonald's US said:

"We are committed to running great restaurants that provide our customers with high quality food, service and a clean environment. This is a part of our soft serve equipment that does not come into contact with any food and is required to undergo regular and timely cleaning."
