Suicide Squad's Sequel Could Feature Mel Gibson As Its Director

Warner Bros. is seeking a director for the sequel to Suicide Squad, and it reportedly has its sights on actor and noted Batman v Superman hater Mel Gibson.

That's according to The Hollywood Reporter, which states that an official offer hasn't yet been made. Gibson is said to be "familiarizing himself with the material" at present, though Warner is also considering others for the role. That includes Daniel Espinosa, who previously directed Safe House, Child 44, and the upcoming Life.

Gibson is best known for his work as an actor, having starred in the Lethal Weapon movies, Braveheart, and Signs. But he's also been a director on a number of movies, including Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ, and Apocalypto. Most recently, he helmed Hacksaw Ridge, which has attracted positive reviews and various award nominations.

The pairing of Gibson and the DC Cinematic Universe certainly sounds like an odd pairing, though Suicide Squad director David Ayer didn't seem like the most obvious fit when it was first reported. That movie was largely panned by critics, though it grossed $745 million worldwide. That's apparently enough to justify a sequel, which was reportedly in development before the release of the first film.

Gibson previously criticized one of DC's biggest films, Batman v Superman, which he described as a "piece of s***." He's also been critical of the violence in Marvel's movies.

There's not yet any word on the plot of the new movie. Ayer is currently working with Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie on Gotham City Sirens, which will focus on DC's female supervillains.
