College football has existed for a long time, and there have been thousands upon thousands of games played since its inception. None of those games were between Arkansas and Notre Dame.
That will change in 2020, as the two schools announced a home-and-home series on Thursday.
"It's remarkable to think our historic programs have never met, but we are excited that this will change in the near future as we add the University of Notre Dame to our football schedules in 2020 and 2025," Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long said. "This series will benefit our football program, our university and the Southeastern Conference, but more importantly it is an opportunity for our football student-athletes to compete against one of college football's storied programs while providing a premier match-up for our fans. This series will provide a once-in-a-lifetime road trip and another memorable football Saturday at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.
The first game between the two will be played on Sept. 12, 2020, in South Bend, and Notre Dame will make the return trip to Fayetteville on Oct. 4, 2025.
Now, while you can debate how "historic" of a meeting these games will be, it's not just cool to see Notre Dame scheduling SEC opponents when it already has to play so many ACC foes, it's that these games are scheduled to be played on campus.
This is a trend that needs to continue in college football. It's great to have games between major programs that don't meet very often; it's even better to have those games on campuses instead of a sterile NFL stadium.
