Abstract: Objective: To detect the levels of thyroxin and thyroid autoantibodies in patients with alopecia areata(AA). Methods: Chemiluminescence immunoassay was used to measure the levels of free triiodothyronin(FT3), free thyronxine(FT4), thyrotrophin(TSH), thyroglobulin antibody(TGAb) and thyroperoxidase antibody(TPOAb) in 111 patients with AA and 85 healthy controls. The positive rates of thyroid antibodies were compared between AA and normal controls. Results: In comparison with normal controls, the levels of serum FT3 and FT4 were higher while the levels of TSH were lower in patients with AA, but no significant differences for either of them. TGAb positive rate was no significant differences between AA group and normal controls. In contrast, positive rate of TPOAb in patients with AA was significantly higher than that in normal controls(P<0.05). The positive rates of neither TGAb nor TPOAb differed significantly between the mild and severe AA group, or between the recurrent and non-recurrent AA group. The positive rate of TPOAb was higher in female patients than in male patients(P<0.05). Conclusion: The positive rate of TPOAb is significantly higher in patients with AA, and higher in female patients than in male patients.
