I live in the state of New South Wales in Australia. We don't have a state gun. We have beautiful beaches and national parks, so come and visit, but if you are doing a gun tour maybe Tennessee has more to offer you.

I think this has more to do with the fact that the company is based in Tennessee than their love of large caliber rifles.

But people are going to treat it as this is just another example of how everyone in America is obsessed with guns.

u/neuhmz avatar

We do love guns.

[deleted]
[deleted]

I agree. But I'm speaking to the people who point it out critically, to suggest that it's a flaw.

u/neuhmz avatar

Screw'em, keep an open mind and come to the range with us. r/shootingtrips

Well, we are. Guns are a big part of our history. They are passed from one generation to the next. You only hear about them when they are used for the wrong purposes. You don't hear about the countless responsible gun owners because that is not news.

[deleted]

Yes, and I completely agree with that, but when people say "Americans are just gun crazy and obsessed with guns and weapons", they're not saying it in the sense of we value history and tradition. I completely agree with you, but we both know that this is going to turn into a "Why do Americans need so many guns" argument.

You love guns because it's not that big a part of your history.

In Europe we're no longer all that fond of them because, well, they were used here a lot, but not for fun on Sunday afternoons.

Edit : and this is not to criticize your love of guns, it's more to explain why we may have a different outlook on them.

u/Koulyone avatar

it's not that big a part of your history.

The Colt 45 would beg to differ.

I have nothing but respect for Americans to have any gun laws or state guns they choose. I'm just offering an alternative for tourists considering what state to holiday in. I'd find a state gun a little off putting from a tourist perspective and I was just trying to sweep any tourist dollars belonging to people that feel the same way towards my state economy.

u/woodendolphin - I had a great interaction with you the other day, so I do respect you, but seriously. These "official state whatevers" are nothing anyone spends much thought about at all.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Are you accusing me of putting thought into my comment? I see a piece of low hanging fruit, I pick it off the tree, take a bite and throw it over my shoulder when the next low hanging piece of fruit comes into view. I never mean to cause offense to anyone not looking for it, but perhaps I am guilty at times of looking to cause offense to those that seem to enjoy being outraged. I know that isn't you, you just got concerned I was sprouting some sort of left wing rubbish. I'm not and I never would.

No no...I'm not saying anything about you. I'm saying that when planning a vacation, no one says "Well look at this. The official state bird of Minnesota is the ruby throated woodpecker, we should go there" or "Oh damn, I was going to go to Alaska, but their official state knife is the Marine Corps Kabar, so I guess that's out."

There are gun owners in this country. People would have you believe that it's the wild west here, but it isn't. There are responsible gun owners, and there are irresponsible gun owners. The media only ever tells you about one of those groups, which incidentally, is a much smaller group, yet gets all the attention.

EDIT: Typo.

We have beautiful beaches and national parks

BORING

u/Koulyone avatar

They don't need guns down under. There have more than enough wildlife that will kill you.

u/neuhmz avatar

And they are all too small to shoot anyway.

The best days of my youth were spent at the beach. I never got into board riding, I preferred body surfing with a wetsuit (for extra buoyancy) and fins. Honestly, you should try it. If you find it boring you need to go to a beach with bigger waves. It is a genuine rush to experience the sensation of your body becoming one with the power of a wave.

[deleted]
[deleted]

The two aren't mutually exclusive. I love days at the beach, I love spending time in the water, in the woods, camping, hiking, etc.

[deleted]
[deleted]

I agree, but the exhilaration felt when passively observing as occurs when walking in the bush (hiking in the woods) is different in my experience to the sensation of being a passenger on something as powerful as a wave. I love bushwalking and I love getting cool in the shallows of a beach on a hot day. Catching a wave is a different kettle of fish though. It is like nature being a passive observer of you rather than you enjoying what you see on a walk through a forest.

I'm very obviously replying to a specific sarcastic comment that was clearly intended to suggest that there's one flaw in particular that should be changed.

Nitpick: It's an anti-materiel gun, not a sniper gun.

u/Koulyone avatar

I stand corrected.

u/ElMachoGrande avatar

No problem, common misunderstanding.

Only in testosterone laden Amerika do we find the need for officially appointed state armament. sheesh.

If you knew the story behind the gun you might understand why they did it. This gun has saved the lives of American soldiers. They are recognizing that.

Is the state mascot Hickok45 and is Tennessee sponsored by Federal Premium?

Was the Barrett .50 provided by Buds Gun Shop?

u/FruitierGnome avatar

Id like to thank federal for all this ammo

They are manufactured there, talk about a rich mans toy. They are a lot of fun but impracticable if you don't have a bank account large enough.

u/Koulyone avatar

I think the ammunition is about $5 a round. So yeah. not for the monetarily challenged.

u/neuhmz avatar

Sometimes more than that, That's really when you start to reload your ammo. You don't really save money but you shoot a lot more.

State vegetables I get. But state guns?! What is wrong with some people?!

u/Koulyone avatar

Well as far as helping to save the lives of Americans in battle, this weapon has done that. They are trying to recognize that fact. Oh and it's made there.
