Tom Cruise seems to now be on a roll with Universal these days. First is the upcoming reboot of The Mummy (opening June 9th), as well as the introduction of Universal’s Dark Universe. Now we have Cruise back at it for American Made, but in a bit of a different role. He plays a real-life commercial airline pilot-turned-smuggler by the name of Barry Seal, who the CIA recruited to use for one of the largest covert operations in U.S. history. As outrageous and crazy the exploits seem in the trailer below, it’s worth noting that they did actually happen.
The trailer feels like The Wolf of Wall Street mixed in with Narcos; even being based on a true story, they have fun telling it. That’s probably in part to having director Doug Liman steering the ship. This isn’t the first time Liman and Cruise have worked together, as they teamed up on Live, Die, Repeat (Edge of Tomorrow). It was also just recently announced that they’d be doing a sequel to that film together as well. Here’s what Liman had to say about the film when he first started working on it in 2015:
“I love stories of improbable heroes working against the system, and Barry Seal took the government, and our country, for an unbelievable ride. Interpreting his story has the makings for an entertaining film that is equal parts satire, suspense and comedy—and always surprising.”
American Made hits theaters on September 29th and stars Tom Cruise, Caleb Landry Jones (Get Out), Sarah Wright (Parks and Recreation), Alejandro Edda (Fear the Walking Dead), Lola Kirke (Gone Girl), Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad), E. Roger Mitchell (Flight, The Equalizer), Benito Martinez (How to Get Away with Murder), Domhnall Gleeson (The Revenant, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), and Jayma Mays (The League).
