Ahead of its September release, The LEGO Ninjago Movie gets a new poster that highlights its core team of ninja warriors. In 2014, Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, Han Solo) brought their unique brand of humor to Warner Bros' The LEGO Movie, helping the animated action/adventure film become a success both in terms of critical response and the box office. In the wake of The LEGO Movie's success, Warner Bros announced a sequel - The LEGO Movie Sequel - and a whole host of spinoff films, including The LEGO Batman Movie that debuted in February of this year, The LEGO Ninjago Movie arriving in September, and The Billion Brick Race set to premiere in 2019.
Warner Bros already released a full trailer for The LEGO Ninjago Movie and a poster teasing the journey of the film's main character, the Green Ninja named Lloyd (Dave Franco). In the studio's next upcoming LEGO franchise installment, Lloyd must assemble a team of master ninjas in order to face off with the villainous Lord Garmadon (Justin Theroux), who also happens to be Lloyd's father. In the latest piece of marketing for The LEGO Ninjago Movie, Lloyd and his team come together.
EW debuted a new poster for The LEGO Ninjago Movie that features Lloyd with his teammates: the Ninja of Water, Nya (Abbi Jacobson); the red Ninja of Fire, Kai (Michael Peña); the blue Ninja of Lightning, Jay (Kumail Nanjiani); the white Ninja of Ice, Zane (Zach Woods); and the black Ninja of Earth, Cole (Fred Armisen). In addition to those listed above, The LEGO Ninjago Movie stars Jackie Chan as Master Wu - Lloyd and his team's master, as well as Lord Garmadon's brother (making him Lloyd's uncle) - and Olivia Munn as Koko, Lloyd's mother. The film was directed by Charlie Bean (Tron: Uprising, Robotboy) from a screenplay by Hilary Winston (Dr. Ken, Happy Endings), Bob Logan (Dennis the Menace [1986 TV series], Ghostbusters [1986 TV series]), and newcomer Paul Fisher.
Warner Bros' LEGO franchise is still in its early stages since only two releases having hit theaters so far in The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Batman Movie, but both have been well received by critics and audiences alike - though reviews for The LEGO Batman Movie were somewhat less impressed than those for Lord and Miller's 2014 franchise kickstarter. Ninjago is the second installment in the franchise to debut this year, and with arguably much less buzz than The LEGO Batman Movie since it doesn't have the benefit of starring a breakout character from The LEGO Movie (not to mention a yellow brick building block version of one of the most recognizable superheroes of all time).
So, Ninjago will offer a decent opportunity to gauge whether Warner Bros' LEGO franchise has the potential to work without an immediately recognizable leading character and continue on after Lord and Miller have departed for a galaxy far, far away. Whether or not The LEGO Ninjago Movie sees the same kind of success as The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Batman Movie remains to be seen when it hits theaters later this year.
