The importance of joint efforts for reducing the costs of broadband deployment

The Government of Tyrol encouraged Municipalities to build their own passive Broadband infrastructure. This is an example of joint efforts by Regional Authorities, Municipalities and private companies to reduce the costs of broadband deployment.

The Broadband Competence Offices Support Facility (BCO-SF) team has interviewed Michael Mairhofer, Team Leader of Tyrol Regional Government Economy Department. He explained how more than 140 Municipalities took part in the “Breitband Masterplan fur Tirol” project and cooperated with the Regional Government and energy companies to provide an open network. The TIWAG (energy supply company owned by the Region of Tyrol) provided 1.500 km of empty conduit infrastructure. The Austrian Government supported the project with national funds.
