Comparative study of clinical features of mixed state and depressive phase of bipolar disorder

Abstract: Objective To explore the differences of clinical features of mixed state and depressive phase of bipolar disorder. Methods Clinical features of 62 patients with mixed state of bipolar disorder (mixed group) and 44 ones with depressive phase (depression group) retrospectively analyzed. Results Positive rates of character traits such as impatience,adherence,irritability and impulsion were significantly higher in mixed than depression group (P<0.05 or 0.01). Positive rates of mental symptoms such as unstable mood,pre-sleep indulging in free association,fretfulness,flight of thought and obsession were significantly higher (P<0.05 or 0.01) and those of self-accusation,self-abasement,lowness and sadness lower (P<0.05 or 0.01) in mixed than depression group;positive rates of physical symptoms such as headache,sleep need decrease and palpitation were significantly higher (P<0.05 or 0.01) and those of dreaminess and drowsiness lower (P<0.05) in mixed than depression group. Conclusion Character traits of impatience,adherence,irritability and impulsion are more outstanding in patients with mixed state of bipolar disorder than in ones with depressive phase,their mental and physical symptoms have differences and can be used as observation indexes for characteristic screening.
