Abstract: Objective To explore the efficacy of fluoxetine combined with olanzapine in the treatment of major depression (MD) with suicidal tendency (ST). Methods Eighty-six MD patients with ST were assigned to observation and control group of 43 ones each according to random number table, both groups were treated with fluoxetine, and observation was plus olanzapine for 2 months. Anxious and depressive conditions were assessed with the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) and Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) respectively. Total effective rates and the incidences of adverse reactions were compared between 2 groups. Results After treatment total effective rate was respectively 90.70% in observation and 72.1% in control group and the former significantly higher than the latter (P<0.05). After treatment the HAMA and HAMD scores of both groups were significantly lower compared with pretreatment (P<0.01) and those lowered more significantly in observation than in control group (P<0.01). The incidence of adverse reaction was respectively 11.63% in research and 9.30% in control group, which showed no significant difference (P>0.05). Conclusion Fluoxetine combined with olanzapine have a better effect and higher safety compared with single fluoxetine in the treatment of MD patients with ST,which deserves clinical generalization and application.
