In 2015, we learned that Lego Movie and the standalone Han Solo movie directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller would be writing an animated Spider-Man film. Earlier today, Sony Pictures confirmed that the movie was happening, and announced that the film would feature Miles Morales, rather than Peter Parker.

This untitled Spider-Man film will be directed by Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey and won’t be connected to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe that includes Spider-Man: Homecoming and The Avengers. Despite that, it’s exciting to see Morales get his big-screen debut, especially after three cinematic iterations of Peter Parker.

While today’s press conference included some footage, (which io9 described as “Morales fighting a purple-and-yellow clad villain”), Sony did not announce any cast for the film. Donald Glover (Community, Atlanta), has voiced the character for the Ultimate Spider-Man TV series (and will appear in this year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, although he’s not expected to play the character in that).

When word broke that Sony and Marvel would be bringing Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there were some calls to use Morales, rather than Peter Parker, given that Parker had already been the lead in the Sam Raimi’s trilogy and Marc Webb’s reboot. The role ended up going to Tom Holland, who dazzled us in Captain America: Civil War, though some aspects of the character — like his best friend — seem lifted somewhat from Miles’ story. Now, Miles is finally getting his own big break.

Morales was first introduced in Ultimate Fallout #4 in August 2011. He, too, was bitten by a spider and developed superpowers, and took up the mantle of Spider-Man after witnessing Peter Parker’s death at the hands of the Green Goblin. Since his introduction, Morales has become an incredibly popular fixture within the Marvel universe, opening the door to talk about race and diversity through the character, joining other characters such as Ms. Marvel and Totally Awesome Hulk, which have been part of a larger push from Marvel to bring in younger readers of color.

The untitled animated Spider-Man film will hit theaters December 21st, 2018.
