A new promo for the season 2 finale of Supergirl reveals that Kara (Melissa Benoist) and Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) will battle it out in National City’s main square. 'Nevertheless, She Persisted' will air on May 22. It is directed by Glen Winter and written by Robert Rovner & Caitlin Parrish from a story by Andrew Kreisberg & Jessica Queller.

The most recent episode, 'Resist', saw the complete invasion of National City by the Daxamites -- the sister species to the Kryptonians. The episode also found the many disparate subplots this season -- Cadmus, the Luthors, and the DEO -- finally meet as tensions exploded, leading into what looks to be an action-packed season finale for the Girl of Steel.

Not only does the promo tease the hero vs. hero battle between Supergirl and Superman, it sees Kara herself taking on a very public responsibility when she gets on national television to tell Rhea and the people of Earth that she will fight the horde of Daxamites. The trailer also offers a brief glimpse at major fight between Supergirl and Rhea as well.

There is a lot riding on the Supergirl season finale, especially since it features the return of her famous cousin Superman after a well-received two-episode stint in the early part of season 2. Back then, the Girl of Steel found herself with a welcome teammate as the two used their combined might to take down a mutual foe. This time around, Kara is truly on her own -- which makes sense considering it's her show -- as she finds herself up against an army of similarly powered individuals with the fate of the planet at stake.

Seeing the two Kryptonians duke it out will likely bring back memories of Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, but hopefully with far less deadly results. While the outcome of Kara's battle with Clark is likely easy to surmise, the end result of her battle with Rhea isn't, much less how the series plans to introduce the nefarious General Zod. If anything, the answers to those questions will be enough to get even the most casual of viewers to tune in for the biggest episode in Supergirl's run so far. With The CW already renewing the series for season 3 and the stakes being so high going into the finale, it looks like Kara is only just hitting her stride.

Supergirl will conclude season 2 next Monday with 'Nevertheless, She Persisted' @8pm on The CW.
