NBA Live 18 gets new career mode with league and street basketball

You are The One

NBA Live 18 will feature a new career mode called The One that will let people play pro basketball in the NBA as well as pickup games on real-life street basketball courts, publisher Electronic Arts announced today at EA Play 2017.

As in most career modes in sports games, you’ll be able to create your own player in The One and customize his look by earning new gear as you progress through the mode. The two major components of The One are very different: the organized basketball of the NBA (“The League”) and the freestyle game outdoors on the blacktop (“The Streets”). It’s unclear if there’s any kind of narrative component to The One.

You’ll rise through the ranks no matter where you decide to play — “the respect you earn in The Streets matters just as much as the rings you earn in The League,” EA said on the NBA Live website. Real-life street courts available to play in The One include Venice Beach, California, and Rucker Park in New York.

Player customization also extends to how you play on the court. You’ll be able to choose from a variety of playstyles that depend on the position you pick, as well as a “signature ability” — a special talent that only you have — and various traits.

EA stressed that The One is not only a single-player experience. The mode will include “uniquely crafted Live Events” that will be playable in solo, co-op and multiplayer settings. Interested parties will be able to try out The One in NBA Live 18’s demo, which will be available free in August on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Any progress in the demo will carry over to the full game for customers who end up buying it.
