Abstract: Objective This study aims to explore the neuronal activity in the subthalamic nucleus in patients with akinetic-rigid-type Parkinson(s) disease (PD).Methods A total of 25 akinetic-rigid type PD patients underwent bilateral implantation of an electrode for subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS).Microelectrode recordings were performed in the STN during surgery and the neuronal activity was analyzed offline.Neuronal spike trains were extracted and their spectral characteristics were calculated. Results Of 180 neurons obtained from akinetic-rigid type PD patients,64 (35.6%) neurons showed significant oscillatory activity with beta frequency. Conclusion Beta frequency neuronal discharge in STN are likely responsible for akinetic-rigid signs.
