Introduction: Oriental Inspired Box

About: I hope i can show you that you really dont need to be a master craftsman to create and build great projects, and hopefully inspire you to start making yourself. I will try upload a video every Monday but due …

Ive always loved Japanese / oriental projects and themes etc, i find them really relaxing.

So i came up with this idea for a box, made from scrap as always but with a oriental feel to it.

I hope you enjoy!

Step 1: Cutting

As always 1st thing i do is to cut all my pieces down to size, i started with the lid and put a heavy bevel all around the edge, next i used a 2x4 and some other scrap to make up the box itself.

The overall size turned out at 83mm L x 54mm W x 57mm H

The lid turned out to be - 96mm L x 58mm W x 8mm thick

Step 2: Glue and Hollow

I glued up the box and used a spade bit to hollow out most of the box and cleaned it all up with a chisel

Step 3: Cork

I added a small strip of cork to the bottom , using titebond 2 works well to glue cork to wood, and i just used some stones to weight it down while it dried

Step 4: Handle

For the handle i used a thin scrap of wood, and cut a 45 on each side, and i used 2 6mm dowels to attach it to the lid

Step 5: Drill for Dowels

I wanted the handle to sit above the lid, so i drilled some holes for the dowels and only drilled a little way into the handle this gave it a nice height and look

Step 6: Sand and Glue

I sanded the lid and handle from 120 to 1,200 and glued it in place, once it was dry i trimmed the dowels flush and sanded them down again

Step 7: Sand and Drill

Next i sanded the outside of the box to 1,200 , next i drilled out some holes for 4mm x 1mm magnets , i just used super glue to keep the magnets in place

Step 8: Final Sand and Finish

i sanded all the glues parts and magnets to 1,200 and it was on to finishing, to finish i used 4 coats of spray lacquer sanding at 1,200 in between coats

Step 9: Job Done

Thats it , job done, a great Japanese / oriental inspired box.

The finish is glass like and i love how it turned out.

I hope you do to.

I hope you enjoy!
