Emotional Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham vows 'terrorists will never beat us'

Andy Burnham has issued a moving statement claiming terrorists will "never beat us" following the attack at Manchester Arena

The former Labour MP and new mayor of the city said the "best response" to the attack, which has so far claimed the lives of 22 people, is to work together and support each other and carry on with day to day life.

Speaking in the city ahead of a meeting with the Prime Minister later today he also praised Manchester residents who offered their homes and cars to help those affected by the attack last night after a concert by Ariana Grande.

He said terrorists "don't want to think people will work with each other" to pick up the pieces after the explosion and called on the city to pull together in the days and weeks ahead.

It came as Theresa May announced she will travel to the city later today to meet police chiefs, Mr Burnham and the emergency services who helped to manage the impact of the attack, in which 59 people were injured.

Many of those still in hospital have life-threatening injuries, Mrs May said.
