On your mark…get set…and go sign up for the Rowayton Civic Association’s annual Rowayton Fun Run.

Bring out the whole family to participate in the 38th annual Fun Run on Father’s Day, June 18. The race kicks off at 9:30 a.m. from Rowayton Community Center.

Runners will have the option of choosing between the 2.2-mile short course or the 4.4 mile long course.

Divisions include 10 & under, 11-15, Open, Masters (45-59), Senior (60+), and Single and Double Joggers. Children under 15 may only run the short course, and an adult must accompany all children under 9.

The fee for running is $12 for adults and $6 for children.

Those interested can enroll in online pre-registration at www.rowaytoncurrents.com. On-site registration will run from 8:30-9:20 a.m. on race day.

SOUTH NORWALK

The NICE Festival will be kicking off a bit earlier this year with their pre-festival, India-themed reception dinner.

Join the Norwalk International Cultural Exchange celebrate the commencement of their 2nd Annual NICE Festival with a unique cultural event that will be sure to delight and engage your cultural curiosity.

Join the cultural connoisseurs at the Fodor Farm at 328 Flax Hill Road from 5:30-10 p.m. on Thursday, June 15 for a night filled with fun activities, such as Bhangra dance, turban tying and the Sikh martial art known as “Gatka,” Indian food cooking demonstrations and tastings, Henna art and much more.

Tickets cost $35 per person, including a complimentary Indian food and drink ticket.

The NICE Festival will kick off in earnest from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on July 8 at Oyster Shell Park on North Water Street.

The festival series aims to celebrate the rich global heritage and culture so evident in the music, food, art and talent of which we in Norwalk are so proud. The NICE Festival Series host dancers, musicians, food and craft vendors from multiple traditions and customs; and encourage the community to spend the day together.

THE GREEN

Memorial Day may have come and gone, but who needs a holiday to celebrate their patriotism?

Get the red, white and blue ready for Flag Day on Sunday, June 11, as the U.S. Coast Guard Band brings their rendition of “Stars and Stripes Forever” to the Norwalk Green, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The concert features numerous patriotic marches, including several by America’s “March King,” John Philip Sousa.

A wide selection of other patriotic music is also on the program, honoring the service of those who fight to protect our flag and freedoms.

The United States Coast Guard Band is the premier band representing the United States Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security. The 55-member ensemble is based at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London.

This event is free and open to the public. In case of rain, the concert will be held in City Hall.

HOSPITAL HILL

The secrets of glass blowing, radio for the masses, and the American Revolution undercover will be revealed as three members of the Humanists and Freethinkers of Fairfield County present their avocations at a special meeting at the Silver Star Restaurant on Monday, June 12, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Food and drink will be available as Jim Russell, of Ridgefield, demonstrates on video how glass blowing is done.

Fred Cunningham of Stamford will explicate how the art of ham radio is using the latest technology with participants from 7- to 100-years-old.

Norwalker Eric Chandler will share his interest and knowledge of American Revolutionary history that has transformed him into a sought-after speaker on the subject.

The Humanists and Freethinkers of Fairfield County combine reason and compassion, integrating modern understanding of the world with an affirmative life view. All are welcome at the meeting.
