iPhone's Volume Slider No Longer Covers Videos in iOS 11

iPhone users can finally cross one item off their wishlists: the volume slider no longer covers videos in iOS 11.

Now, when a user adjusts the volume while watching a video, a much smaller volume HUD appears in the top-right corner of the screen.

While the change is small, the user interface tweak was highly requested by many iPhone users for several years. On iOS 10 and earlier, the volume HUD intrusively pops up in the center of the screen for a few seconds after the volume is adjusted, unnecessarily covering the video content until it disappears.

Some third-party apps such as YouTube already had their own smaller volume HUD, and now the look is universal across iOS 11, as part of Apple's broader improvements to the native video player on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Apple introduced iOS 11 at its Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday. The first beta was seeded to registered developers later that day, to be followed by a public beta in late June. iOS 11 will be available as a free software update for all compatible iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch models around September.

I still like the round shape volume-button of the iPhone 5 than the pill-shaped of iPhone 6 and after.
 
Nice! Surprised nobody noticed until now? Don't let people fool you when they say iOS 11 doesn't change much. All of these small changes add up to a better user experience.

Now if only we could get them to implement the same double tap left/right on a video to skip back/forward 10 seconds that YouTube has. I find myself accidentally trying to do this in the native video controller all the time because it's so useful and intuitive.

Again the level of care by Apple to customers is forgetful. Apple don't care about consumers, Apple will do what Apple wants, and consumers be damned!!! Something that could have been done in the very 1st update to ios1...but no Apple said eff off to consumers...

Watch in the 1st update to ios11 the volume will be back to where it was in ios10!!

I don't mind the current large volume indicator. Not a fan of the tiny Youtube volume slider, but this new change in iOS 11 looks like it might be the best of both words.

Have you used the Prime Video app at all? The single touch play/pause is amazing.
 
Finally. It was ok when it was just the bars and mostly translucent. Then they really ruined it.

Now how about something like this for the rest of the system. I don't need a volume "screen" when I'm playing a game, either.

I actually think YouTube used to have something like this, but changed because people would accidentally tap the display all the time while watching a video. I think you could probably design around it by making a smaller, oval hitbox in the center of the display, which would eliminate accidental edge taps. Sounds like that might be what Amazon did?
 
This headline had me confused: "iPhone's volume slider no longer covers videos." So it does still cover the video, just less of it (which is what you'd expect if it's still there in unless they "letterboxed" the video or something, which I would not expect). :)

Also, despite the headline, I assume the modified HUD has also made its way to iPad? I really didn't find it that obtrusive on either device but especially not on the iPad where the amount of video it covers is smaller by percentage.
 
They make a nice change and then they dont put the rotation lock there. odd?
 
Do you know what I wish they'd also address:

When I'm in "mail" and need to adjust something from the pull up screen, say brightness, I sometimes (read mostly) delete the email I'm looking at because I touch the delete icon which is dead center when swiping up....all the time :/

They could have just thinned down the original "digital looking" UI. This one looks lifted straight out of Android. They should keep the steps and the translucency, just do away with the huge speaker, and put it in the top right as it is now. Guess future versions will refine this. This is just a first review version out for us.

I think this is Apple's way or reminding you to keep your inbox tidy. :p
