On Business: Trying Something New (Old)

One of my personal failings is that I generally maintain a running assumption that no one gives a rat's ass about what I think. I don't say that with anything like a faux-self-deprecating modesty; I just have literally decades of work that I've posted online that has consistently garnered little attention and/or response. My entire oeuvre is met with a metaphoric collective "meh."

Which I've come to terms with. (Mostly.)

But there do seem to be a few people out there who do seem to genuinely like what I have to say, some of whom have even been kind/generous enough to support me on Patreon! I started a Patreon account at the urging of one such person, and while I was skeptical that it would garner much attention (see above) I figured even a few extra bucks is something.

One of my problems with Patreon, though, has been in getting patron-specific content out there. I don't have much free time left for more research/writing, and I'm usually writing so close to my deadlines that I can't post much in advance. Which has left me feeling a bit guilty for not adequately thanking my patrons for supporting me when so few others can/will.

(Have I said "thank you" to you lately? Seriously, I think the world of you guys! Thanks so much for your ongoing support! It really does mean a heck of a lot to me!)

Last week, it finally dawned on me that I did have something else I might be able to do for my patrons. As I suggested above, I have a huge backlog of writing that I've done that is either not available at all online or impossible to find unless you're expressly looking for that specific piece. But what I can do, then, is re-present it exclusively for my patrons. I've talked before how webcomic creators can re-purpose older material, but for whatever reason, it didn't occur to me that I could do that myself too. Probably something to do with the fact that it got a big ol' non-reaction the first time; why would anyone want to read it again now? But, hey, let's turn that weakness into advantage -- if no one bothered with it when I first wrote it, that means it's effectively new content as far as most everyone is concerned!

I think one of the problems I had was that I hadn't been posting much additional content on Patreon itself. While potential patrons couldn't see the posts themselves, they could see how infrequently I was posting. But by using my older material, I can put a lot more out there, and ensure that it goes up on a regular basis. Hopefully, that will show others (like yourself!) that patrons get a little something more than a vague promise of advance material whenever I might have something.

Starting last week, I began posting some of my old MTV Geek columns. (Remember when MTV Geek was a thing?) I'll be posting one every Tuesday and Thursday for the foreseeable future. I did some back-of-the-envelope math, and figure I've got at least two years' worth of the MTV Geek stuff alone going at that rate. I've already got them queued up through the end of September, and I'll be continuing to add them in my free time.

Plus, I'll still be posting whatever advance work that I can. As I'm trying to get back into writing my book on Blackstone comics, that material will start showing up as well.

So if you were ever on the fence about whether you should might want to contribute to my Patreon, this is my attempt at a little extra incentive. If you like or appreciate the type of research and writing that I do, I'd be thrilled if you could find your way to donating even as little as a dollar. Every bit helps, and every bit is greatly appreciated! Click here to head on over to my Patreon page!

Thanks!
