Travellers who have set up their base in Llanelli have been warned they have until tomorrow to move on.

A group of eight caravans turned up at popular tourist destination North Dock at the weekend - causing some problems for other people who wanted to park there.

Carmarthenshire Council’s Head of Housing and Public Protection Robin Staines has said the authority has engaged with the Travellers, and warned action will be taken unless they leave the area.

He said: “We have visited the site and spoken to the travellers.

“We have informed them that if they do not move on by tomorrow we will serve a direction order and approach the court to have the order enforced.

“Colleagues are working closely with the Discovery Centre to manage the situation.”

A resident had said: “I had parked my car and bought a ticket, when two people came up to me and said I had to move my car.

“I was a bit confused and asked why, and they said it was because they had another caravan coming and it needed the space.

They turned up in North Dock on Friday night, and have since been approached by the council.

“I realised who they were then, and told them I’d bought a ticket, so I wasn’t going to move my car.

“They weren’t happy about that, and I called the police.

“The police said there was nothing they could do.

“Because the Travellers arrived Friday afternoon when the council offices were closed, the police said they couldn’t move them without the council coming down, so the Travellers have all weekend to enjoy being at the beach.

“They’ve got washing lines set up in spaces, gas BBQs, toilets, all in the car park.

“Their ponies are tethered by the marina and having swims.

“I don’t know how it’s allowed.

“Everyone else who wants to enjoy the beach is parking on grass verges wherever they can.

“And everyone is buying a ticket, they don’t have a proper space and are still going up to the machine and paying for their parking.

“They are just so blatant, it’s going a bit beyond.

“After I called the police they told me that I should move my car.”

It is not the first time Travellers have parked up in Llanelli. In July last year a number of caravans parked up at Sandy Water Park, before leaving again soon after to attend a religious festival.

Dyfed-Powys Police has been contacted for comment.
