No foreign power has been able to succeed in Afghanistan. Not the British, nor the Russians. We do need intelligence to be aware of future direct threats to our country and our allies, but we do not need to shed the blood of more American soldiers there. We cannot change Afghanistan, we can only kill more Afghanis and make more enemies.

The war on terror phase ended a long time ago. It's since been about creating a "civil society," like making sure girls don't get murdered when trying to attend school.
But who cares, anymore? I don't. Let's leave and let the locals wipe themselves out. They've had centuries of practice. They aren't going to stop now.

just accept the Taliban as govt and then they can irradicate heroin and get our dirty hands on the worlds second biggest treasure trove of rare metals.

About time to leave that place, it is what it is, Afghanistan will never change, if they can't do it from within, we can't so it either. From Alexander the Great to the Russians, everyone for thousands of years has tried. Time to pack up and leave.

And then what?

The US spends 60% of all tax revenue raised on “defence” if the US is not killing people across the globe then the fat cat heads of US defence corp and its shareholders do not grow filthy rich. That is THE only reason the US is still in Afghanistan.
Raw Beer
The US never should have gone in. Terrorism was just an excuse.
HonestDictator
@Raw Beer the US actually did have a good reason, but apparently it's long been forgotten. Now there really is no reason to stay, but I'm guessing the DoD wants more bases for "strategic" locations. The US should leave, pack up all bases, and leave Afghanistan's corrupt government/society to destroy itself.
Although as a parting gift, I think it would be nice to toss a ton of flyers in the native language informing them that they can either grow up and get better, or wallow in the oppressive system of their own making. Either way, we're no longer going to help them.
Reminds me of what an Egyptian secularist said, "They spend so much time raiding, pillaging, and destroying farms and villages for food and resources. They don't take enough time to grow crops, breed cattle, and develop economically so they continue to raid, pillage, and destroy until there are no more farms and villages."
Just how stupid is that?

Do you think Trump could pick out Afghanistan on a map?
