DAVE Edwards of Wimborne, Tony Bevan and David Medina of Bournemouth, and Peter Sykes of Swanage, responded to the picture of Wimborne Square sent in by Roy Harris and printed on May 17.

Former AA patrol man Dave Edwards remembers the area well as he was then doing an apprenticeship in a nearby garage and also bought meths and tea lights for the AA boxes from F Sheppard & Son. On the left side of the picture near the minster he recollects there being a gas showroom and Curry's store in the 1960s.

Tony Bevan said the picture was taken circa 1953/54 when his uncle worked in the Midland Bank. He and David Medina identified the cars as a 1935 Light 15 Daimler directly in front and on the right a 1953 Ford Prefect, the most modern car at the time, above that is an SS Jaguar, then an Armstrong Siddeley and a R M Riley.

Peter Sykes said the Midland Bank in the picture became HSBC and closed last year. The shop F. Sheppard & Son was still operating in 1965 and then at some stage became a branch of Nationwide estate agents. Outside the shop can be seen the striped Wilts and Dorset bus stop, buses still call at that location.

Just out of the picture on the right, on the corner with West Street, would have been the F W Woolworth & Co Ltd chain store at no.17 The Square.

For many years the well known King's Head Hotel, on the other side of the junction with West Street, had an ivy covered facade. This was cleaned and architectural features were highlighted in the current paint scheme.
