Man confesses to 1993 murder in emotional TV interview
A California man says his faith in God led him to confess to the 1993 murder of a young man.According to KRCR, Brian Keith Hawkins, 44, turned himself in to the Shasta County Sheriff's Department after an emotional interview with the TV station.Hawkins confessed to the murder of 20-year-old Frank Wesley McAlister, and named 46-year-old Shanna Culver and her brother 45-year-old Curtis Culver as accomplices. Investigators say the motive for the murder was robbery. In 1993, McAlister had recently received money from a settlement. Investigators believe the Culvers and Hawkins lured him to Shingletown under the guise of selling him methamphetamine. When he arrived, Curtis Culver and Hawkins stabbed him to death. In his interview with KRCR, Hawkins refused to answer specific questions about the murder, but said finding God was what led him to confess. "God and Christ and these things that have happened over the course of 25 years have pushed me and pushed me to do the right thing," said Hawkins. "I know the wrong can't be changed, but this is the closest I can come to doing the right thing."He said it has been miserable to live with the secret."Horrible, horrible, horrible, absolute horror, absolutely horrible since that day. Every minute of every day has been a nightmare. It's kind of weird, Frank never got to have a life, but we were teenagers and now I'm 44 and still haven't even had a life and now most likely won't anyway," Hawkins said. "I've been through hell my whole life because of this." He said wanted to ask McAlister's family for forgiveness, but by the time he reached out, the victim's father had died. Hawkins said he hopes the community can forgive him. Investigators say one of the Culvers confessed as well, but did not specify which one.
